Local Archaeology The Council's Archaeological Unit is committed to preserving and recording the City's past and making it more available to the public. Day-to-day work includes the monitoring of present and future building development to ensure that fragile historic remains are not destroyed or damaged without record; excavation and survey of sites within the uniquely well-preserved medieval burgh and beyond; historical and archaeological research; care and interpretation of the City's archaeological collections; and the provision of new evidence to the public through exhibitions, talks, educational projects, guided walks and historical re-enactments. The Unit is responsible for the maintenance of a Sites and Monuments Record, which details over 2000 known sites of archaeological and historic interest within the City.
